In this podcast episode, my guests Alice and Abby from Play Makes Sense share their passion for the “learning through play” approach, emphasising its significance for children’s education. They touch on the importance of sensory play, phonics, and maths learning through play, providing practical tips and creative ideas for parents and educators alike. They also encourage parents to embrace play as a powerful learning tool.

In this episode about using a learning through play approach for learning to read and early maths, you will learn:

  • Learning Through Play Approach: Embracing a learning through play approach for children, whether at home or in educational settings, can foster a love for learning and build a strong foundation in various skills.
  • Phonics Learning: Phonics is a crucial aspect of early education, and integrating it into play activities can make it engaging and effective for children to learn to read and write.
  • Maths Learning: Maths encompasses more than just numbers; it includes shapes, patterns, measurement, and more. Encourage mathematical exploration through play, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Sensory Play: Sensory play activities stimulate multiple senses, enhancing learning experiences and helping children develop fine and gross motor skills.
  • Parental Involvement: Parents can actively support their child’s learning through play by setting up simple activities, being patient, and joining in the fun. It’s a great way to bond and create lasting memories.
  • Individualized Learning: Tailor play activities to your child’s interests and abilities. Whether they love vehicles, music, or art, aligning play with their passions can enhance their learning experience.
  • Embracing Mistakes: Encourage children to embrace mistakes and learn from them during play. This fosters resilience and a growth mindset, promoting a positive attitude toward learning.

Remember: Learning through play doesn’t require elaborate setups; simple, everyday materials can lead to valuable learning experiences for children.
