Tips for helping your child’s comprehension by sprinkling it in
Listen on your chosen podcast player
As a parent, you always want to ensure that your child is excelling in their learning journey, especially when it comes to reading. Reading comprehension is a crucial skill that lays the foundation for academic success and overall cognitive development. In this episode, we will explore some valuable insights and actionable tips with my guest Gabriela, a seasoned primary school teacher and tutor. Let’s delve into some key strategies to help your child enhance their reading comprehension skills effectively.
In this episode about getting started with comprehension with your child:
Importance of Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension is more than just decoding words on a page. It involves understanding and interpreting the text, making connections, and deriving meaning from what is read. Gabriela emphasizes that once children master decoding, the focus shifts to comprehension, which is a significant aspect of their reading journey.
Tips for Enhancing Comprehension at Home
Gabriela suggests that parents can actively support their child’s comprehension skills by engaging in simple yet effective practices. One key strategy is asking questions while reading with your child. These questions can range from predicting what might happen next in the story to discussing unfamiliar vocabulary. By incorporating this practice into bedtime reading routines, parents can seamlessly integrate comprehension skills development into everyday reading sessions.
The VIPERS Approach
Gabriela introduces the VIPERS approach, an acronym representing key skills needed for comprehension: Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explain, Retrieval, Sequencing/Summarizing. By focusing on specific skills in each reading session, parents can help their child hone these essential comprehension abilities gradually.
Making Bedtime Reading Enjoyable
Bedtime reading should not feel like a chore for children. Gabriela suggests finding books or materials that align with your child’s interests, such as comic books or magazines. Additionally, experimenting with audiobooks can provide a refreshing and engaging alternative to traditional reading sessions. By diversifying reading materials and incorporating fun elements, parents can keep the joy of reading alive for their children.
Seeking Support and Building a Supportive Learning Environment
In cases where parents feel overwhelmed or unsure about their child’s reading progress, Gabriela stresses the importance of open communication with teachers. Establishing a partnership between parents, teachers, and tutors can lead to a more comprehensive and tailored approach to supporting the child’s learning journey. Additionally, fostering a patient and supportive environment at home can positively influence a child’s approach to learning and encourage growth over time.
