HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS EPISODE:
Once your child’s an age where they may be attending preschool, you might be thinking about whether you should be starting to teach them to read how you should go about this and where do you start.
TOPICS COVERED:
- starting age will vary but starting too early doesn’t necessarily mean they will be ahead
- get pre-reading foundations set first
- use phonics sounds rather than the alphabet. Find a scheme to follow to teach this
- encourage blending
- letter names will come later and once children are secure with single sounds and then digraphs the switch will begin
- It’s ok to have exposed them to the alphabet song
